Greenwashing: Are They Really Eco-Friendly?

Greenwashing is a slightly new term. When we are trying to create a more eco-friendly lifestyle, there are a lot of scams we should be careful about. It is actually a more common situation than you might think. As a consumer, we should search for environmentally friendly products too and prioritize them.

What Can We Do to Be More Conscious?

Greenwashing comes from the term “whitewashing”. Whitewashing means covering up faults and crimes or scandals. Nowadays companies prefer to spend money on marketing, this way they show themselves as green. Greenwashing is a form of misleading the people. They show the products like they are eco-friendly while they are not actually non toxic, harmless or eco-friendly (whatever you want to call). All they do is create a false scene.

If  you are a person who actually cares for the environment, you go and check for the suitable products. You would prefer an eco-friendly company and want to buy their products. Then after all you end up accidentally contributing to harming the environment. Supporting the wrong company.

Don’t forget to do your research. Are these products certificated? Make sure they are verified. You should look for actual evidence.

For example, what does recycled materials do for the company? Some of them might be partly true but we should be careful because companies tend to exaggerate this information. Their claims or the benefits in an attempt to mislead consumers.

Find the right resources. Don’t believe the packaging. Marketing is somehow clever packaging. What it looks like may not be what it is actually.

Many companies use “green claims” to market their products. Modern world means a hyper-consumption based living style. Marketing these kinds of false claims are very common at this point. A consumer should stay awake and be skeptical when hearing the word “eco”. Are they really “saving the Earth”? We can’t save the world as one person may think, but changing the way we live can change it!
